Compress a video to 8 MB

Fits your video into 8 MB. It never leaves your device.

  1. Choose a video

    Drop a video here, or

Your video never leaves your device

  2. What do you want to do?

  3. How do you want to edit it?

Pick as many as you like. Each one opens its own editing screen, and they are all applied in one pass at the end.

  4. Make the file

Four promises

No upload

Your video is handled only on your own device. It is never sent anywhere, so you can safely use it with work or school videos.

Just pick

Pick Discord as the place you are sending to, and the size and the picture quality are set for you. There is nothing complicated to set up.

No watermark

Nothing is stamped onto your video, and there is no limit on how many you make.

Picture quality like the pros

We use the numbers people use in video work. If the picture quality is going to drop a lot, we tell you before you save.

How to use it

  1. Choose the video you want to shrink.
  2. The target size starts at 8 MB. Type a different number if you want another size.
  3. Check "What you will get" to compare the size before and after.
  4. Press the button to make the file and save it.

8MB is a limit that comes from older rules

You usually need 8MB for one of these reasons.

  • Discord’s older limit. The free limit went up to 20MB in August 2026, but guides written before that — and habits inside a group — often still say 8MB. If you only need to send it on Discord today, the Discord page aims at 19MB and keeps more quality.
  • Forums, contact forms, and internal systems. “Attachments up to 8MB” is still a common rule.
  • A small mailbox on the other end. Email turns an attachment into base64 to send it, which makes it about 1.37 times larger on the way. An 8MB video is handled as about 11MB.

How much video fits in 8MB

8MB is 64,000,000 bits. With 128kbps used for sound, this is what is left for the picture.

Video length Left for the picture (per second) What to expect
30 seconds About 2,000 kbps 720p still looks reasonable
1 minute About 940 kbps 480p is the sweet spot
3 minutes About 230 kbps Rough. Better to trim first
5 minutes About 85 kbps Anything with motion falls apart
10 minutes Nothing left Sound alone uses up 8MB

Treat 8MB as a size for videos of a minute or less. Past three minutes, trimming to the part you want to show beats lowering the quality.

What to cut first

With the same 8MB, what you remove changes how it looks. In order of effect:

  1. Trim the parts you do not need. Halving the length doubles what the picture can use.
  2. Crop the edges. Cropping closer to the subject keeps fine detail at the same file size.
  3. Drop the sound. If you do not need it, mute the video: on a five-minute video that frees about 4.8MB for the picture.
  4. Lower the resolution (SakuConvert chooses this for you).

Common mistakes

  • Aiming for exactly 8MB and going slightly over. Sites check for “8MB or less”, so it is safer to land a little under. SakuConvert keeps a small margin.
  • Using phone footage as-is. 4K at 60fps carries a lot of detail, and squeezing it into 8MB breaks it up. Trim it, or use a destination with a larger limit.
  • Compressing an already small video again. You lose quality without saving much space. If the estimate is close to the original size, send the original instead.

Nearby sizes: 10MB and 25MB.

Tips from the pros

  • 8 MB is a very small target. For anything over a minute, trim first or pick a larger size.
  • Fitting a long video into 8 MB costs a lot of quality. Trimming first keeps the part you care about looking better at the same size.
  • If it will not fit, you will see how short it needs to be. Trim to that length and try again.

Common questions

Will it be exactly 8 MB?

It will not go over 8 MB. It usually lands a little under, and sometimes well under, depending on the video.

How much quality will I lose?

It depends on the length and size of the original. You can see the resulting size and frame rate before you start, and you are warned when quality would drop a lot.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Everything happens inside your browser. You can turn on airplane mode after the page loads and it still works.

Does the sound stay?

Yes. If you do not need it, choose "Change the volume" and then "Mute" — that frees up room for the picture.

Can I use it as often as I like?

Yes. There is no limit on how many videos you make, no watermark, and no sign-up.
