We use the numbers people use in video work. If the picture quality is going to drop a lot, we tell you before you save.

How to use it

  1. Press "Choose a video" and pick a video.
  2. Drag the handles at each end of the thumbnail strip to set the part you keep.
  3. To be exact, type the times into "Start here" and "End here" (like 1:23).
  4. Press "Compress and save" and only that part is saved.

Trimming is the strongest move

When you need a smaller file, halving the length doubles what the picture can use. Look at the length before you touch the resolution — see making a video smaller without ruining it.

Destinations have length rules too: X allows 140 seconds, and LINE on a phone cuts anything over five minutes.

Choosing where to cut

As you move the cut point, the frame at that point is shown on screen, so you can see what you are keeping instead of guessing.

  • Leave about a second of headroom so viewers do not miss the first words.
  • Cutting in the middle of applause or laughter sounds abrupt; cut on a gap in the sound.
  • To keep several separate parts, export one at a time and join them in an editor.

It cuts where you asked

Cutting a recording in some tools only works at keyframes, so the result drifts from the point you chose. SakuConvert re-encodes, so the cut lands where you set it.

That costs time. Long videos finish faster on a computer.

What you can do in the same pass

All of it happens in one export, trimming first and compressing after, so no quality is wasted.

Tips from the pros

  • Cutting out what you do not need lets you keep a better picture at the same file size. If it will not fit the limit where you are sending it, try cutting first.
  • The cut is made at the nearest break point, so it can be out by a frame or so.
  • When you are getting a video ready for X (formerly Twitter), it is trimmed to 140 seconds for you.

Common questions

Is the part I cut out deleted?

Your original video stays as it is. A new file is made with the part you kept.

Can I keep just the middle?

Yes. Set "Start here" and "End here" to the part you want to keep.

Can I keep two parts and join them?

Not for now. Joining pieces together belongs to full editing software, so we have decided not to build it.

If I only cut, does the picture quality stay the same?

It is rebuilt a little, so it drops very slightly. If that bothers you, use "Pick a quality" and choose "High".

Is a long video all right?

Yes. It just takes longer to save.
