Picture quality like the pros
We use the numbers people use in video work. If the picture quality is going to drop a lot, we tell you before you save.
How to use it
- Press "Choose a video" and pick a video.
- Pick a shape (free, 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, or 4:5).
- Drag the frame to move it, and change its size with the handle at the bottom right.
- Press "Compress and save" and only that part is saved.
Cropping also buys you file size
Dropping the edges gives the rest of the frame more to work with. At the same file size, a cropped video keeps more detail.
It pays off most for:
- Screen recordings — crop to the area you are demonstrating and small text stays readable.
- Phone footage that has to fit a landscape slot.
- A subject in the middle — trimming the empty surroundings makes it larger.
Choosing the aspect ratio

To export vertical, open make a vertical video — it starts at 9:16.
Keeping the quality
- Do not crop too far. The tighter the crop, the rougher it looks once it is scaled up.
- Crop first, compress second — which is the order SakuConvert uses.
- Keep the original. A crop cannot be undone.
If the frame lands in the wrong place
When a video is rotated, the crop applies to the rotated picture. Set rotation first, then crop, and it behaves the way you expect.
Tips from the pros
- Stretching a small crop up a long way makes the picture blurry. Above 1.5x you get a warning.
- Instagram often uses 1:1 and 4:5, while TikTok and Shorts use 9:16.
- If someone's face is not in the middle, move the frame before you save.
Common questions
Does cropping lower the picture quality?
It looks rougher by as much as the crop has to be stretched up. Above 1.5x you get a warning.
I want a vertical video.
The "Make a vertical video" page is easier. It starts with a 9:16 frame in the middle.
Can I set the frame with numbers?
For now it is dragging only. We will look at exact numbers in the next version.
Does my original video change?
No. A new file is made.
Can I crop and compress at the same time?
Yes. Changes stack up, and they are all applied in one save.
