Taking the sound out of an iPhone video

.mov is the container iPhones and Macs use. Pulling the audio out as MP3 lets you

  • send a recorded meeting or interview to transcription as audio only,
  • listen to a performance or practice recording on a music player, and
  • save space — an hour of video can be several GB, while the MP3 is around 60MB.

The picture is discarded, so keep the original video.

Quality after the conversion

MP3 is a compressed format and cannot improve on the original. For recorded speech, 96–128kbps is plenty; for music, use 192kbps or more.

If the sound drifts or breaks up

HEVC video is slow to decode on some devices. Converting to MP4 first and then taking out the audio is often more stable.

Tips from the pros

  • Videos from an iPhone are usually HEVC, but that makes no difference when you are only taking the sound out.
  • If you are using it as a recording of an interview, 192kbps is plenty.
  • It works in Safari on an iPhone too (Safari 26 or newer).

What is MOV?

It is a container for video that Apple devices use a lot. Inside it is HEVC or H.264 picture, with AAC sound.

Can I do it all on my iPhone?
