How to use it

TS files come out of recording equipment

.ts (MPEG-2 TS) is a container used in broadcast and recording. You end up with one when you

  • record on a camcorder or a professional recorder,
  • capture a stream with a capture device, or
  • export from a tuner or set-top recorder.

Few players open it, and editing software often refuses it. Converting to MP4 turns it into an ordinary video file.

Points to watch

  • If the video inside is H.264, quality barely changes — it is close to just swapping the container.
  • Long recordings take time. For anything over an hour, use a computer on mains power.
  • Trimming first is faster. Use edit the length to keep only what you need.

Recordings split into several files

Some equipment splits a recording into several .ts files. SakuConvert converts one file at a time; join them in your editing software first if you need a single file.

When the sound drifts or playback stops

TS is a broadcast format, so data is sometimes missing in the middle of a recording. Cutting out the area around the damage with edit the length often lets the rest export cleanly.

Tips from the pros

  • TS files often will not play on phones or in a browser. MP4 can simply be sent and watched.
  • Pick the "High" quality setting to stay close to the original, or compress instead if size matters more.
  • Trimming the dead air at the start and end also makes the file smaller.

Common questions

Will any TS file work?

MPEG-TS files containing H.264 or HEVC will. Encrypted broadcast recordings will not.

Does the quality drop?

Slightly, because the file is rebuilt. At the "High" setting the difference is hard to see.

Does the sound stay?

Yes. Choose "Mute" if you do not want it.

Can it handle large files?

Yes, though it takes longer on some devices. Browsers that let you pick the save location first (Chrome, Edge) handle large files best.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Everything happens inside your browser.
