When a video will not send on LINE, or gets cut at 5 minutes
LINE does not publish how long or how large a video can be. So we sent videos of different lengths and sizes and checked what happened. Here are the results, and how to send your video the way you want.
The short answer
- LINE on a phone sends only the first 5 minutes of a video longer than 5 minutes. The rest never arrives.
- LINE on a computer sends videos of 5 minutes or longer as a “file”. The other person cannot play it right away, has to download it, and it expires after 7 days.
- We found no size wall. A 600MB video went through.
All of this comes from sending videos to ourselves on September 12, 2026. LINE may change how it works without notice.
How we checked, and what happened
We made videos of different lengths (4, 5, 6, 8, and 10 minutes, 640×360) and different sizes (100MB, 300MB, and 600MB, each 1 minute at 1080p), and sent them to ourselves in a LINE chat.
LINE on a computer
| Video sent | How it arrived |
|---|---|
| 1 minute, 100MB | Video (plays right away) |
| 4 minutes | Video (plays right away) |
| 5, 6, 8, and 10 minutes | File (expires after 7 days) |
| 1 minute, 300MB | File (expires after 7 days) |
| 1 minute, 600MB | File (expires after 7 days) |
Videos that arrived as a “file” were not made smaller; they arrived at their original size. (LINE shows the 600MB video as 572.2MB only because of a different way of counting sizes [1MB as 1,000,000 bytes or as 1,048,576 bytes]. The contents are the same.)
LINE on a phone
- A 10-minute video was automatically cut to its first 5 minutes before sending.
- A 600MB video also went through.
Where the “5 minutes” comes from
You often read that “LINE videos can be up to 5 minutes”, but LINE’s official help does not say how long a video sent in a chat can be. As far as we could find, the only place “5 minutes” appears in the official help is the description of the album feature (a LYP Premium benefit). (See: LINE’s official guide, in Japanese)
When we actually sent videos, phones cut them at 5 minutes, and computers switched to “file” from 5 minutes. So “5 minutes” is not a published limit, but it is how LINE really behaves.
Fixes for each problem
The later part of the video does not arrive (phone)
LINE on a phone sends only the first 5 minutes. If the part you want to show is later in the video, choose which part to keep and make it 5 minutes or shorter before you send it.
The other person cannot play it right away, or it becomes a “file” (computer)
Videos of 5 minutes or longer, and large videos, become a “file”. When we kept the video under 5 minutes and under 100MB, it arrived as a “video”.
It could not be watched after 7 days
Anything sent as a “file” expires after 7 days. If you want people to be able to watch it again later, it is safer to send it as a “video”: under 5 minutes and under 100MB. LINE does not explain in detail how long videos sent as a “video” are kept either. Keep your original file for any video that matters.
Preparing a video for LINE with SakuConvert
On the Prepare a video for LINE page, you can make your video easy to send on LINE.
- Press “Choose a video” and pick the video you want to send.
- Videos longer than 5 minutes are cut to 5 minutes automatically. To decide which part to keep yourself, choose “Edit the length” under “How do you want to edit it?”.
- Press “Compress” (some browsers show “Compress and save”). The video is made to fit the size that arrived as a “video” (under 100MB).
- When it is ready, on a phone you can pick LINE straight from “Save to Photos or send to an app”.
Your video is not sent anywhere. It is processed only inside your browser (Why it is safe).
